To continue Bomb Bomb’s legacy, Baldino chose Max Hachey, most recently sous chef at Philadelphia’s Friday, Saturday, Sunday, as chef de cuisine. Jorgen Ericksen, long-time manager at Baldino’s Palizzi Social Club, created the drink menu.
The lively corner bar will be a neighborhood gathering spot, especially for sports, shown on two TVs and will remain the perfect stop before or after a concert or game at the nearby stadiums.
To enter the back dining room, there is a separate entrance, located on a small street, along the side of the building. The room simply decorated, as in the past, with nautical-themed Italian artwork, red-and-white checkered cloths, and original lighting pendants.
Baldino, who was born and raised in South Philly, is best known for reviving the Palizzi Social Club, also located in the neighborhood. The iconic Club, an original Italian Social Club founded in 1918, was passed down through his family. Baldino brought Palizzi into a new era, with his classic menu of Italian-American cuisine including passed-down family recipes, and by keeping the retro atmosphere with original bar stools, antique photos of past members, and linoleum floors. Both Palizzi Social Club and Bomb Bomb Bar are places that have long contributed to the fabric of the historic South Philly neighborhood, and Baldino’s efforts both honor their pasts and keep them alive for new generations.
Baldino is also known for his beloved first restaurant, Zeppoli, in nearby Collingswood, NJ. The BYOB restaurant serves traditional Sicilian cooking that Baldino learned while studying and traveling in Italy. Frequently listed as a James Beard semi-finalist for Best Mid-Atlantic chef, Baldino is also the author of Dinner at The Club, a cookbook of his Italian-American classic recipes features at Palizzi Social Club.
